Some More Work

Over the last two days, I've also moved forward on these three pieces:

I thought I'd try a darker background for the view outside the window, emphasizing the contrast between it and the lighter rose.

And this one. More on this in another posting.

Rolling Along On The Vineyards

If I can get these last two vineyard paintings done, I can approach some venue or other about a show.

I'm moving the table that was over on the left a little further in, after the foreground dries.

The Sidewalks Of New York

I spent almost the entire painting session today trying to make the sidewalk look convincing. It turns out each panel is a different color! There are light and dark greys, brownish greys, whitish areas, blue tones, smudgy areas and others that have a distinct lined pattern. I'm going to have to let it all dry and then come back with a few more coats. The only area that's actually working right now is the atmospheric shadow under the bench on the right.

I Miss This Place

Friends of ours used to live right around the corner from Le Diplomate, and we used to meet up there several times a year. Sadly, they moved away. I always found it to be a gold mine of images, and should probably find an excuse to dine there again soon.

Back After A Break

I really needed some time off. Painting is like any other job in some ways; I treat it (or try to treat it) like an office job, five days a week. The pieces I've been doing over the last few months have all gotten to the point of tedium, but now it's time to pick up a brush and get serious again. The landscapes are a good way to get back into it, because they're looser, so here's today's start:

I added a little Alizarin to the clouds in an effort to keep the painting from being too greeny/yellow green overall.

I Struggle With Roses

Over the years I've seen extraordinary paintings of roses in vases; some artists know how to create the bulbous form of the blossoms with a slash of color here and there, sometimes done with a palette knife. But I can't seem to grasp it. Here is today's try:

Back To The Crows

I still have to refine the way the light hits the feathers, and clean up the sky a little.

This Still Needs a Title

I can't keep calling this, "Untitled Mulberry Street" forever. But I'm having trouble coming up with something appropriate. I kind of like "Madonna Of Mulberry Street," but I don't think most people would realize the dictionary meaning of madonna: A woman of subtle, spiritual beauty.

Anyway; I did adjust the color on the sweater and redrew the hands and the hip area. I think it's working so far.
