All In A Day's Work

It's always hard getting started on Mondays, but around 2:00 I managed to pick up a brush.

New Work

Normally I like to finish something before starting a new piece, but the real pleasure in creating a work of art is in the early stages; later on, things get tedious and the detail work is annoying. With the state of the world being what it is, I need a little happiness! So I've started/finished stapling some canvas to stretchers for 3 new works and am looking to begin a 20"h x 24"w panel.

Haven't Forgotten Baby

Was in the middle of repainting the rug with a mix of half a dozen colors when I was interrupted. Things like that just throw off my concentration to the point where I start making big mistakes. Took a break to calm down and when I came back decided that the rug color was all wrong anyway; mixed in some darker tones and now am putting it aside for a few days. It looks okay right now, but we'll see.

An Evolving Experimental Piece

I don't know where this is going; I've been finding shapes in the swirls and in the paint itself and am letting it evolve. I don't have a clear idea of what it will look like when it's finished. So take this image with a grain of salt; it might change radically over the coming weeks.

A Painting Blog In Wartime

How do you turn a blind eye to what's going on in Ukraine? I can't. This is meant to be a simple record of the advances and experiments and mistakes I make on a near-daily basis as I try to be the best painter I can be. But the unprovoked military attack of Vladimir Putin on its neighbor country can't be ignored this morning. The future looks grim for all of us.

While listening to CNN, I decided to plow ahead with the skaters painting; we can't allow ourselves to become immobilized with fear. The barely-controlled brushiness of the white/blue/grey paint application on the icy area was in tune with my mood. I will let it dry now and go back over it several times over the next couple of weeks in order to build a believable ice rink surface, complete with skate marks.

Fresh Faces

This will be the 5th— and the last—piece in the Winter Skaters Series.

 Another step forward.

Maybe Done?

I think I've exhausted the amount of reworking on this one.

Closer

I'm running out of minor details to work on here. I put some time into the folds on the bartender's blouse and tried to make that odd mass of weird color in the lower right hand corner make sense. I think it must be a stack of glasses.
